This is done in order to allow time for your permanent BMV license plate to arrive in the mail. Ohio car registration plates are easily obtained by visiting a local licensing agency and applying for them in person.
Furthermore, if you live in Cuyahoga, Geauga, Lake, Lorain, Medina, Portage or Summit counties and have a vehicle up to 25 years old, you must have it inspected with the BMV as part of the registration process. Moreover, BMV license plate applicants in these counties may request a multi-year registration period between two and five years, if desired. In the event that the vehicle is leased, you will need to bring the lease agreement and power of attorney that provides permission for you to renew a license plate on behalf of the lender. Ohio drivers are responsible for replacing license plate tags that are lost, stolen or damaged. Finally, keep in mind that you are required to complete an out of state vehicle title transfer within 30 days of moving to Illinois or purchasing a nonresident vehicle, under current law.

For example, if you are an existing Illinois resident completing the process of transferring an out of state vehicle title after purchasing a nonresident vehicle, you will also be required to submit the corresponding tax form.
Note: If you are leasing the vehicle or your title is held by an out-of-state lienholder, you will be required to submit additional paperwork. Completing the out of state title transfer in person in Illinois is the standard method of converting an out-of-state title to one issued by the SOS. Once you become an Ohio resident, you'll need to visit a BMV office in person and transfer your out-of-state driver's license to the state. You will need to present some required documents, pay the driver's license fee, and possibly pass some required tests.
