Go start, run and type "services. Posted 22 May - PM. Learnatic Member Topic Starter Member posts. Thanks MBM, By 'getting in the way'.. When I right click on a folder, say My Documents, and click 'Search', I get a large, bulky, feature packed screen.

I then scroll down to 'Click here to use Companion'. Another box opens and can do my simple search. A most tedious 'advantage' when I do many searches a day. I have permanently affixed to my tool bar a 3cm box 'Search Desktop' that I don't want. I cannot remove it. I have followed the above instructions and disabled the "Indexing Service" and "Windows Search" and rebooted But the simple panel does the search with full functionality.

Thanks for your time. A bit of good news.. I removed the "Search Desktop" box from my Toolbar Re: the http social msdn link above.. I have in time learnt how to remove mild trojans and virii but this Microsoft one is the one that seems stuck with no easy and safe instructions to remove. Posted 23 May - AM. I was before unsure of what you wanted to do. I apologise if I have misled you. To use Search Companion directly do this. Run then type 'regedit'. Close that and you're done, the next time you click 'Search' in explorer, the old, reliable search companion will appear.

See my screenshot. Having realised from your post that you were also referring to the - Toolbar - Windows Search Deskbar on the Taskbar I was about to send this but see you had sorted that aspect.. Searches will still work, but will be very slightly slower with Indexing turned off. I want to uninstall it via add or remove programs. I just started the process and received a scary message that many programs depend on Windows Search 4. I've tried finding the ramifications of uninstalling Windows Search 4.

Will I be messing my computer up if I uninstall Windows Search 4. I'm a professional software developer ie. Unfortunately, there is one consequence that has me stumped - Windows XP now takes much longer to complete booting up.

It shows the desktop image, then hangs around for about minutes. No joy. I think its probably best to NOT install this rubbish software - MS clearly didn't test uninstall before releasing it.

I'm hoping that a later MS update will fix my problem. Will post here again if I find whats causing the problem. Now Windows XP loads up and shows the Taskbar in a few seconds instead of waiting around for minutes!

Classic search now works fine and if its slightly slower then the new-fangled way, its not much slower I have now hidden this ridiculous update so that hopefully it will never darken my door again.
